The Configurations Lab · Advisory · Engineering engagements

Engineering engagements.

Senior engineers working inside product and engineering teams at international insurance and financial services companies.

The Lab's advisory practice takes two forms. Diagnostic engagements apply the Lab's research instruments to an organization's AI configuration. Engineering engagements put senior engineers to work alongside client teams on the systems those organizations run on: backend platforms, integration layers, and identity. The second grows out of the first. The Lab studies how people, technology, and institutions reshape each other, and the engineers we work with build in exactly that territory, where a new channel, an AI-driven interface, or a new way of signing in changes the platform beneath it. We look for engineers who read a system before changing it.

§ 01How we work

Small, senior, and embedded. Engineering inside the client's own environment.

We support product and engineering teams at international insurance companies and in financial services more broadly. Engineers join existing teams, work on clearly scoped problems, and take real ownership of what they build. The work is remote and async-first, with defined points of overlap for design reviews and planning.

Scope

Clear problems, real ownership.

Engagements are hands-on and well defined. Engineers coordinate with a technical lead on architecture and priorities, and keep autonomy over how they plan and implement their work.

Security

Inside the client's environment.

We work inside our clients' secure environments and follow their security procedures. The Lab has a documented Information Security Policy that all personnel acknowledge.

Confidentiality

Discretion by default.

Every engagement runs under signed confidentiality and intellectual-property terms. The work belongs to the client, so we describe our skills and sectors, never our clients or what we built for them.

Part of the Lab's advisory practice. The Configurations Lab works through research, convening, and advisory. Engineering engagements sit under advisory, next to the Lab's diagnostic work on organizational AI configurations. For research collaboration, see working with the Lab.

§ 02Open roles

Two senior engineering roles. Both in Go, both remote.

Both roles are independent contractor engagements with The Configurations Lab LLC, for product and engineering teams in the insurance sector. Candidates based in Colombia are our first focus, and we also consider candidates in other Latin American countries.

Senior Software Engineer. Integration Platform.

Build the services and integration patterns that connect AI-driven channels, such as conversational agents and partner-facing APIs, to a large-scale insurance platform. You join a small, focused team and coordinate with a technical lead on architecture, scope, and priorities. The work combines new API design with pragmatic integration of existing backend systems.

LocationRemote. Based in Colombia; we also consider candidates in other Latin American countries.
ScheduleAsync and self-directed, with some recurring meetings in European hours.
EngagementIndependent contractor with The Configurations Lab LLC.

What you will do

  • Build and maintain Go microservices that expose a clean, unified API across core insurance operations.
  • Design integration adapters that hide protocol differences (REST, gRPC, SOAP, XML) behind consistent internal interfaces.
  • Implement asynchronous and event-driven patterns in place of synchronous polling in long-running transactional flows.
  • Contribute to API contract definitions (OpenAPI, Protobuf) as the source of truth for new interfaces.
  • Write unit and integration tests against real backing services.
  • Take part in design reviews, code review, and async collaboration across time zones.

What we are looking for

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering, with strong Go expertise.
  • A solid understanding of REST API design, gRPC, and Protocol Buffers.
  • Experience integrating third-party APIs, including protocol and format translation.
  • Familiarity with async and event-driven patterns: message queues, workflow engines, or equivalent.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and AWS.
  • The judgment to read and extend existing codebases confidently without over-engineering.
  • Professional working English, written and spoken.

Nice to have

  • Contract-first development with OpenAPI.
  • Kafka or another event-streaming platform.
  • A background in fintech, insurtech, or regulated payment integrations.
  • Secrets management in production (Vault or equivalent).

Schedule and meetings

Some recurring meetings, such as design reviews and planning, take place during European working hours. Otherwise the engagement is async and self-directed, and as an independent contractor you manage your own working methods and schedule.

Senior Software Engineer. Identity & Access Management.

Design and operate the identity services a whole engineering organization depends on: single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, session management, and federation, built for high throughput and low latency. You become the reference point other teams turn to when they integrate securely with the identity platform. The work combines new service design with the steady evolution of established identity infrastructure.

LocationRemote. Based in Colombia; we also consider candidates in other Latin American countries.
ScheduleAsync-first, with reliable overlap with the European working day (CET/CEST).
EngagementIndependent contractor with The Configurations Lab LLC.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, and maintain high-throughput, low-latency identity services, including single sign-on (SSO), multi-factor authentication (MFA), and session management and federation.
  • Implement and scale modern authentication and authorization protocols, such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and JWT assertions.
  • Write clean, concurrent, and highly performant backend code, primarily in Go, to support a rapidly growing user base.
  • Use your DevOps background to deploy, manage, and monitor identity services.
  • Act as the subject-matter expert on authentication, and guide other engineering teams on integrating securely with the identity platform.
  • Design and maintain solutions built on custom and standard identity providers.

What we are looking for

  • A solid understanding of web security, and of user identity in the context of federated authentication.
  • Proven experience as a software engineer building complex, distributed backend systems, with strong, demonstrated proficiency in Go and gRPC.
  • Deep conceptual understanding and practical experience with modern authentication flows, authorization frameworks, and cryptographic fundamentals (for example OAuth 2.0, OIDC, and RBAC).
  • Hands-on experience with modern infrastructure tooling. You should be comfortable with cloud platforms (such as AWS), container orchestration (Kubernetes), and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
  • A solid grasp of secure coding practices and common web vulnerabilities (OWASP Top 10), and of how to mitigate them at the architectural level.
  • The ability to design scalable systems that handle massive throughput without compromising latency or security.
  • The ability to explain complex security and architectural concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders, driving consensus across teams.
  • Professional working English, written and spoken.

Schedule and time zone

The teams work to European hours (CET/CEST), which run six to seven hours ahead of Colombia depending on the season. Work is async-first, so the requirement is dependable overlap with the European working day rather than a replicated European schedule. Strong candidates tend to self-select on this, so we state it plainly.

§ 03Terms of engagement

How the engagement works. Stated plainly, before you apply.

Contract

Independent contractor (B2B)

This is a services engagement with The Configurations Lab LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company, not employment. You provide services through your own company or as an independent professional, and invoice for your work.

Obligations

Your own taxes and contributions

You remain responsible for your own local taxes, social-security and statutory contributions, and equipment.

Compensation

Monthly fee in USD

A competitive monthly fee in USD, aligned with senior-level experience and invoiced under an independent services agreement. Share your expectation when you apply and we will confirm the figure before contracting.

Before work begins

Contracting comes first

Work starts once a signed agreement is in place, including confidentiality, intellectual-property assignment, and data-deletion terms, and the Lab's Information Security Policy has been acknowledged. Start dates are confirmed once contracting is complete.

How to apply

If this resonates with how you work, we would be glad to hear from you.
